Ephraim is Joined to Idols, let him Alone - Puritan Jeremiah Burroughs 1650

A video published by Christian Praise and Worship in Songs, Sermons, and Audio Books on March 12th, 2019

Hosea 4:17 17 Ephraim is joined to idols; let him alone. Of this commentary Spurgeon wrote, “Masterly. A vast treasure-house of experimental exposition.” When men shall forsake Christ and the ways of his worship, after means have been used with them, then "Anathema Maranatha," that is, let all the saints of God leave them to the coming of Jesus Christ; let them alone, do not meddle with them; when you have used all means you can, then withdraw yourselves from them, and leave them to the coming of Christ, and Christ will deal with them: let them not only be excommunicated, but so excommunicated that they be let alone to the coming of Christ. So when the godly shall first labour by admonition, and persuasion, and counsel, with the ungodly and sinners, and they shall be refractory, and stout, and stubborn, and be as swine to trample under feet those pearls, or as dogs to turn again and rend them, they are then to let them alone, that is, to let them alone to the coming of Jesus Christ; and even in their own hearts say, "Well, we see no means can do them any good," Maranatha," the Lord cometh, and he shall deal with them himself when he cometh. Burroughs studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and was graduated M.A. in 1624,[1] but left the university because of non-conformity. He was assistant to Edmund Calamy at Bury St. Edmunds, and in 1631 became rector of Tivetshall, Norfolk. He was suspended for non-conformity in 1636 and soon afterward deprived, he went to Rotterdam (1637) and became “teacher” of the English church there. He returned to England in 1641 and served as preacher at Stepney and Cripplegate, London. He was a member of the Westminster Assembly and one of the few who opposed the Presbyterian majority. While one of the most distinguished of the English Independents, he was one of the most moderate, acting consistently in accordance with the motto on his study door (in Latin and Greek): “Opinionum varietas et opinantium unitas non sunt ασυστατα” (“Difference of belief and unity of believers are not inconsistent”).
