Is God Just as Sovereign over Damnation as Salvation? // Ask Pastor John

A video published by Desiring God on July 2nd, 2019

What role does God play in the redemption and damnation of sinners? Is he just as sovereign over both? Today’s question is a bit technical, but super important. And it’s weighty. Here it is. What active role does God play in both the redemption of sinners and in the perdition of sinners? Casey asks it. “Hello, Pastor John! In studying Romans 9:22 22 What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction: –23, I see that the Greek word Paul uses for ‘prepared’ in verse 22 (katartismena) is different from the word he uses for ‘prepared’ in verse 23 (proetoimasen). The first root is artizō; the second is etoimos. Additionally, the first is passive; the second active. Can you explain the significance and meaning of why Paul would use different words and tenses here? Specifically, does this imply that the vessels of destruction were prepared differently than the vessels of mercy?” Episode 1364: https://www.desiringgod.org/interviews/is-god-just-as-sovereign-over-damnation-as-salvation Related Resources: “Competing Spectacles” https://www.desiringgod.org/books/competing-spectacles “Why Does God Choose Some and Not Others?” https://youtu.be/Vuv8lnbNXrs “What Is the Difference Between ‘Called’ and ‘Chosen’?” https://youtu.be/1Gu4NG42qAk “How Does God’s Sovereignty Not Violate Our Decision-Making?” https://youtu.be/ja6IX3A_MZM “Does God Ever Soften a Heart He Has Hardened?” https://youtu.be/EkR98mDp36Y Ask Pastor John Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFF7F6AE365DA3564 Find other recent and popular Ask Pastor John episodes, http://desiringgod.org/ask-pastor-john
