Exodus 23:2
(NIV) 2 "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd,
Matthew 7:13-14
(NIV) 13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
William Secker (died c. 1681) was an English Puritan clergyman in the Church of England and a prolific religious writer known for his practical sermons and devotional works. Early Life and Career: Little is known of Secker's birth or early years, but he served as a preacher in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, before moving to London, where he ministered at All Hallows, London Wall. He may also have been appointed rector of Leigh, Essex, on 30 August 1667, holding the position until his death before November 1681. His ministry emphasized Puritan themes of personal piety and sanctified living amid the religious upheavals of the Restoration era. Notable Works: Secker's writings were highly regarded for their vivid imagery and spiritual depth, influencing generations of readers. Key publications include: A Wedding Ring, Fit for the Finger (1658): A popular sermon delivered at a wedding (possibly in Edmonton, London), exploring divine salve for human frailty. It saw numerous reprints, including editions in Glasgow (1850) and New York (1854), and was translated into Welsh as Y Fodrwy Briodas (Brecon, 1775) and Y Cristion Rhagorol (Bala, 1880).
The Nonsuch Professor in His Meridian Splendor (1660): A collection of seven sermons on the exemplary life of sanctified Christians, dedicated to Sir Edward and Lady Frances Barkham of Tottenham, who supported him. Republished in Leeds (1803), London (1891), and edited with The Wedding Ring by Matthew Wilks (1867), it remains a Puritan classic.
The Consistent Christian (1660): A handbook for Christian living, praised for its richness and pithy insights on humility, pride, and spiritual consistency. Often reprinted, including in modern editions.
Secker's works reflect his commitment to "consistent" faith—aligning profession with practice—and were widely circulated in Britain and America, cementing his legacy as a devotional author. For deeper reading, his texts are available through archives like Chapel Library or Hathi Trust.
