Does Joy Come After Suffering, Or in It? // Ask Pastor John

A video published by Desiring God on December 18th, 2020

Faith does not shield us from waves of sorrow. But it does plant our feet on a rock of immovable joy. And when the waves leave, the rock remains. Today’s question comes to us from a listener named Matt, who emailed us this. “Hello, Pastor John, and thank you for taking my question. I know you often talk about joy inside suffering, like Paul did. And that leads me to my question. In Psalms 30:5 5 For his anger is but for a moment; His favor is for a life-time: Weeping may tarry for the night, But joy `cometh' in the morning. , the psalmist says joy is found on the other side of suffering — weeping lasts the night, ‘but joy comes with the morning.’ But Paul’s testimony in the New Testament claims he found joy together with his suffering. He said this in 2 Corinthians 6:10 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and `yet' possessing all things. , talking about being ‘sorrowful, yet always rejoicing.’ So does joy follow suffering? Or is there joy inside suffering? And did something change in the new covenant?” Read or listen to this interview at our website: https://www.desiringgod.org/interviews/does-joy-come-after-suffering-or-in-it Find other recent and popular Ask Pastor John episodes: https://www.desiringgod.org/ask-pastor-john
