He was the son of Ebenezer Pemberton (1672-1717; Harvard AB 1691) the pastor of Old South Church in Boston and Mary Clark Pemberton (1681-1749). He was a Harvard AB 1721 and was chaplain at Fort William from 1722-1726, a pastor of the 1st Presbyterian Church in New York City from 1726-1753, and then served as a minister of New Brick Church in Boston from 1754 to 1774. Pemberton is considered one of the founders of Princeton University. Princeton gave him the degree of D.D. in 1770, the first that the college ever conferred. His publications include Sermons on Several Subjects (New York, 1738) ; Practical Discourses (1741); Salvation by Grace, through Faith (1741); and Occasional Sermons (Boston, 1771). Boston-born Ebenezer Pemberton pastored a Presbyterian church in New York City for 26 years. During his tenure, the great revivalist George Whitefield came to the city to preach. Pemberton was the only member of the clergy who offered Whitefield his pulpit. As a result, Whitefield came and spoke many times bringing large crowds to Pemberton's church. After his years in New York, Pemberton returned to Boston and pastored the New Brick Church for 23 years until his death in 1777. David Brainerd (April 20, 1718--October 9, 1747) was an American missionary to the Native Americans who had a particularly fruitful ministry among the Delaware Indians of New Jersey. During his short life he was beset by many difficulties. As a result, his biography has become a source of inspiration and encouragement to many Christians, including missionaries such as William Carey and Jim Elliot, and Brainerd's cousin, the Second Great Awakening evangelist James Brainerd Taylor (1801--1829).
